Finally, here's that promised picspam/commentary! My thoughts are very random just be warned.

I absolutely LOVE this opening, especially the score. I used to play this on the piano all the time. The way the camera follows Lizzie and gives us a glimpse of the family/house is so engaging. I also really like the look of the Bennett estate, kind of chaotic and messy like the family.

Haha, I just spammed this scene for Keira's face in the last cap. It's true; seeing their parents kiss is icky.

I just love everyone's faces in this scene. Elizabeth is half-curious, half-amused by Darcy's lack of interest. Bingley is like OMG SO MANY NICE PRETTY GIRLS. Caroline is all like lowly peasants. Darcy is like kill me, I'd rather be in hell than here.

In the conversation between Jane, Bingley and Liz, you can totally see Darcy lurking and eavesdropping in the background. Poor guy is too shy to talk to people he doesn't know. Darcy always looks so regretful after he says something that puts Elizabeth off. Like he wishes he could be more sociable and charming with her, but he just doesn't know how and it isn't until after he's said something rude that he realizes it.

That tree is practically a character in this movie. The flat scenery just looks so cool with that one tree.

Elizabeth Bennet: Are you to proud Mr. Darcy? And would you consider pride a fault or a virtue?
Mr. Darcy: That I couldn't say.
Elizabeth Bennet: Because we're doing our best to find a fault in you.
Mr. Darcy: Maybe it's that I find it hard to forgive the follies and vices of others, or their offenses against me. My good opinion, once lost, is lost forever.
So Darcy thinks a woman doesn't deserve to be called accomplished until she's good at music, drawing, languages and reads books (look at how Lizzie snaps her book shut when she hears that). Haha, good luck finding someone who meets all those requirements dude. Also, do not betray Darcy because he will cut a bitch.

I can't believe the actress that played Mary was the hot blonde Eames was disguised as in Inception. I guess dying your hair blonde does wonders. I love how the costumes pretty much tell you everything you need to know about these characters. Mrs. Bennett, Kitty and Lydia are dressed in frilly pink stuff, Mary's all emo and Liz is all about the practical simplicity.

SO MUCH HAND PORN IN THIS MOVIE.

Mr. Wickham: And buckles. When it comes to buckles, I'm lost.
Elizabeth Bennet: Dear, oh dear. You must be the shame of the regiment.
Mr. Wickham: Oh, a laughing stock!
Elizabeth Bennet: What DO your superiors do with you?
Mr. Wickham: Ignore me, mostly.
Aw, Rupert and Keira. This is probably the only film adaptation of P&P that actually had an initially appealing Wickham. I mean, a girl as smart as Elizabeth falls under his charm so he should be a somewhat magnetic and outwardly charismatic person. The BBC miniseries' Wickham just came off as too sleazy in an obvious way for me to believe that Lizzie would even think he's worth her time. Rupert's Wickham is still kind of playa' but in a more restrained way. Plus Keira and Rupert are pretty together.

AWWWKWARD. Also I love how Bingley and Darcy are all color coordinated to their horses.

I love the color of the walls in their house. Keira looks so pretty in this scene.

THE DANCE. Liz and Darcy are the only people in the world who would have such a deep conversation while twirling around. Perfect for each other?

Elizabeth Bennet: But he's ridiculous!
Charlotte Lucas: Oh hush! Not all of us can afford to be romantic. I've been offered a comfortable home and protection. There's alot to be thankful for.
This scene always makes me sad cause man, it SUCKED to be a woman back then. You have to live with your parents until you're married and if you don't look like Keira Knightley or Rosamund Pike, you might have to marry Mr. Collins. Even for a guy, if you're not the oldest, you don't get shit and have to either join the church or the army. Yikes.

Awww, this scene. I love Lizzie tries to draw Darcy out a little, but she does kind of suck at the piano. She's basically playing a way simplified version of the opening score "Dawn" and she's making a ton of mistakes. Haha, it's OK Lizzie. Darcy doesn't like you for your piano skills.

First of all, this is the prettiest rejection scene ever. I am totally in love with the columns and that building, also the views of the lake and forest. It's such a romantic location yet it's being used for this scene of him baring his soul and her shutting him down. I mean, Darcy is just being honest in this scene. It's kind of true that his social standing is waaayyy higher than hers and that her family is kind of embarrassing. Also, Charlotte warned Lizzie that Jane wasn't being obvious enough around Bingley (she knows that guys are really dense about these things). Sometimes he just doesn't realize that his honesty offends people, lol.

I can't watch this scene without thinking KEIRA KNIGHTLEY: ACTING WHILE BEAUTIFUL cause at the 2005 Oscars, they made these fake best actress campaign videos (narrated by Stephen Colbert) and Keira's was about how other actresses had to turn ugly but she acts while beautiful.

DAMN. Darcy's house. Look at those frescoes. Lizzie's all like, shit I forgot he was rich and this could've been mine.

Awww, Georgiana soooo wants them to get together.

Kitty looks pissed as hell, lol.

Not just yes but A THOUSAND TIMES YES. I love the contrast between this proposal and the later Darcy proposal #2. Jane/Bingley have this very sweet and emotional proposal with the whole family coming in to congratulate them while Liz/Darcy's moment is out in a field at dawn and very quiet.

I don't know if the actors did this in one take or had to be up at dawn every day, but what a perfectly timed use of the sun rising. The sun slips above the horizon just as their foreheads come together. ALSO MORE HAND PORN.
The End

drool overahem, see Keira in this picspam because as much as I'd like to own this movie, I actually don't! Hm. I may go out and buy it someday...and laugh through the whole thing because I'll think back to your commentary. XDSeptember 5 2010, 06:19:20 UTC 1 year ago

I adore Mr. Darcy so much. His personality is almost exactly like mine too tbh. LOL Except he's just a little more serious than me. :P

I love that he's all serious, except with his sister and in the end, Elizabeth.

Your comments were spot on bb, I was totally bobbing my head like a dork the entire time agreeing with everything you said, lol. And I'm pretty sure the final shot with the sunrise coming up behind Keira and Matthew wasn't planned according to Joe Wright's commentary on the movie. It was just a rather amazing, perfect coincidence O_o
LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS JSYK ♥

Oh damn, I've actually never listened to the full commentary of the DVD. I should do that, but man, that's such a lucky coincidence. I bet if they planned it, it wouldn't have turned out as well cause they'd have to be thinking about the timing too much.

AND THE CAST IN THIS FILM. EVERYONE IS UGHHH SO INCREDIBLE. And I love the story of how Carey Mulligan got the part--- ALL CHANCE. Without this film, we would have no Carey Mulligan, or Joe Wright going on to do other awesome films. And how they were adamant on Matthew, and maybe without that he would never be in The Three Musketeers idk haha. Or Keira and Rupert!

The casting for this movie is great. I've wanted to see more from Matthew for a long time now (I'm still in the middle of watching Pillars of the Earth), but he was awesome in Frost/Nixon too.

And when I watched the commentary of the movie, Joe Wright said that the sunrise just happened to be a lucky coincidence with everything. Lucky, much? :P
September 6 2010, 01:46:57 UTC 1 year ago
That is lucky! I think it might not have felt as natural if they planned it though cause then they would have to think about getting the timing right.

One of the things I really liked about this P&P is that it showed the grime of late 18th century/early 19th century life. We see how the Bennett household is run, we see a more raucous ball, and we see grime on gowns. Things like that. I always like when period films are a bit more realistic about these things and not quite so sterile.
Matthew MacFadyen's faces in this movie are the best. THE BEST. Especially in that ball scene, the scene where he comes to visit Lizzie at the Collins' and is terribly awkward, and in the first proposal scene (omg wibble wibble).
THE HAND PORN. I love that scene. Just... one tiny flex of the hand. It slays me.
No matter what the adaptation, the Pemberley scenes are always my favourite. I just always lahv lahv lavh that first awkward meeting when Darcy realizes Lizzie is visiting, and later their shy and tenative interactions with each other. BE MORE CUTE YOU GUYS I DARE YOU. And I always love Georgiana the shipper lol.
This was great! I loved looking at the pretty pictures and reading your commentary.

Pemberley scenes are awesome because you get awkward tension between Darcy and Liz, plus lots of architecture porn. Haha.

Mr. Darcy: "Maybe it's that I find it hard to forgive the follies and vices of others, or their offenses against me. My good opinion, once lost, is lost forever." Whoa.

Your comments made me giggle the entire time. First of all, this is the prettiest rejection scene ever That had me laughing for a bit. I like your sense of humor.
God, now I have to watch this for the 84358846800865 time. Who doesn't love that obvious sexual tension between Darcy and Lizzy? It's just too awesome. I've seen other versions of this book but this is by far my most favorite. Keira is so pretty =') she made a wonderful Lizzy.
this pic spam = win & awesome.

This is my favorite version too. I like the Colin Firth one but it was pretty long and I prefer a more condensed version.

he just doesn't know how and it isn't until after he's said something rude that he realizes it.
He looks a little ashamed in the last cap - like he knows he's not being very friendly but there's so many new people/it's all so busy and loud in that countryside hall that he's like FML. Macfadyen's Darcy seems to do that often in the background after conversing with Elizabeth, (the town hall, after the dance at Netherfield, at the piano) he looks like he regretted how the conversation went and wishes he was more ~*~smooth~*~ with the ladies. How endearing.
That cap of Georgiana the shipper is hilarious. It's funny to me that his little sister already knows about Elizabeth Bennet. Gossip much, Mr. Darcy?
A lot of the scenes when wrong because of losing natural lighting (Wickham and Lizzie by the tree, the beginning of Netherfield Ball) but a lot of things were happy accidents as well, including the sun coming up between the two actors during the second proposal! Joe Wright says it was cool because the movie starts at Lizzie walking just after dawn and kind of ends at dawn in that field. If you watch the film with commentary, he gives a lot of cool insights into the shoot, story, actors etc.
Thanks again for the lovely pictures!

Right? Lol, Darcy always looks like he wants to say more or apologize but he just watches her walk away.
I need to listen to the commentary again. It's been ages.
