1:07 am - Are the only good female roles in Hollywood historical/real characters?
|
Where are all the good female roles? ++ Looking at all the female roles in 2009, it seems to me a lot of the stronger characters happen to be based on real-life people. Meryl Streep in Julie and Julia. Carey Mulligan in An Education. Abbie Cornish in Bright Star. Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side. Emily Blunt in The Young Victoria. There was a great NY Times article on this a few months ago that dealt with this. If there are obviously enough great female characters based on real people, then why can't original female characters be like that too? And when they are good, why can't they succeed at the box office the way a bad portrayal like The Ugly Truth can? ( A look back on 2009's women and 2010's potential )

11:58 am - Movie Quotes Meme
|
|
Fun meme I saw from bendleshnitz1 . Thought I'd try it out. 1. Pick 20 of your favourite movies. (These aren't all necessarily favorites but just movies I like a lot and that, IMO, have interesting quotes) 2. Go to IMDB and find a quote from each movie. 3. Post them here for everyone to guess. 4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie. 5. Also, for people guessing, try to give the quote some context (like who said it or what it's about) from the movie!
1. "Look down there. Tell me. Would you really feel any pity if one of those dots stopped moving forever?" The Third Man, matsuo0 2. "A woman doesn't enjoy those things the way a man does. She just lets her husband come near her in order to have children." 3. "Isn't it wonderful? Nobody has to apologize, because we were both stinkers, weren't we?" 4. "I don't believe in surrenders. Nope, I've still got my saber, Reverend. Didn't beat it into no plowshare, neither." 5. "If you want to give me a present, give me a good life. That's something I could value."
6. "I saw my whole life as if I had already lived it." Titanic, bendleshnitz1 7. "Because nobody's going to stop me from my plan. Nobody, nothing. Because I want to be proper!" 8. "I hadn't wanted to see, that she was in love, the way one loves the first time. Nothing would stop her." 9. "Who's Murphy? Who's Doyle! It's Murphy's law... "whatever can go wrong, will go wrong"?" 10. "He should have just accepted things as they are instead of trying to interfere with destiny. You see, you can't interfere with destiny. That's why it's destiny. And if you try to interfere, the same thing's going to happen anyway, and you'll just suffer." 11. "Perhaps it's better if I live in your heart, where the world can't see me." 12. "Well haven't ya heard? She's irresistible. She told me so herself." 13. "Some days I think I'd give everything I believe in - everything I got, all my values, just to have my body back again, just to be whole again. But I'm not whole; I never will be, and that's - that's the way it is, isn't it?"
14. "But, how in hell on earth can you imagine you're gonna have a child with a man who cannot stand you." Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, cherry_ola 15. "You'll never find anyone as good for you as I am, to believe in you as much as I do or love you as much!"
16. "There's nothing more irresistible to a man than a woman who's in love with him." The Sound of Music, allie_meril 17. "You just want to persuade people that you love 'em so much that they ought to love you back. Only you want love on your own terms." 18. "Listen, if somebody gave me the choice right now, of to never see you again or to marry you, alright, I would marry you, alright. And maybe that's a lot of romantic bullshit, but people have gotten married for a lot less." 19. "If I'm sorry nothing came of it, I'm a liar. If I'm glad, I'm a heel. Where do we go from here?"
20. "It could be worse. A woman could cut off your penis while you're sleeping and toss it out the window of a moving car." Fight Club, matsuo0
( Need some hints? )

6:10 pm - Want to be confused? Here's the lowdown on Oscar's voting system
|
The New Oscar Voting System: How Avatar lost PGA? So it seems most Oscar pundits were absolutely knocked over in shock when The Hurt Locker managed to upset heavy favorite Avatar at PGA. If there was one award this season that Avatar was supposed to win by a mile, it was the Producer's Guild. Many predictors were calling Avatar's win a month ago and it only seemed more inevitable when it took home the Golden Globe last weekend.
So imagine everybody's surprise when the Producer's Guild went with the movie that made $12 million at the box office over the movie that's closing in on $2 billion. Apparently, what many people failed to notice or report beforehand is that PGA also adopted Oscar's new preferential voting system this year. They mimicked the Academy's change to 10 nominees and in turn, also changed their ballot system. ( Now prepare to be a little confused.... )

Cruel Intentions vs. Dangerous Liaisons
So for anyone who has seen both movies, you probably noticed that Cruel Intentions really is a very faithful adaptation. Practically every scene had a corresponding one in Dangerous Liaisons; most of the characters and even some of the names as well . They even share a cast member, Swoosie Kurtz who played Madame de Volanges in Dangerous Liaisons and Sebastian's therapist in Cruel Intentions.
There was a bit of a renaissance for teen movies in the late 90's, especially teen adaptations of classic literary plots. Taming of the Shrew became 10 Things I Hate About You. Emma became Clueless. She's All That was sort of based on Pygmalion. Anyways, this is just a comparison of the original Dangerous Liaisons (set in 18th century France) and its teen remake Cruel Intentions (set in the modern Upper East Side).
